Late last year, Bay Area brewing icon and legendary home brewer, Mike "Tasty" McDole passed on. Mike was a legend, mentor, hero to all of us when we started brewing, and running into him at home brewing events, beer events, or at our brewery was always a privilege and a treat. 21st Amendment graciously shared with the brewing community a recipe for their collaboration with Mike on a beer called "Tasty IPA". We were also inspired by Tasty's famous fast lager fermentation techniques. We used both as the inspiration for this beer - borrowing a bit from the Tasty IPA recipe and the idea to make an IPL in the spirit of a quick fermented lager. We altered the hops a bit from the Tasty IPA recipe, and used the Lutra Kveik yeast to simulate a fast lager fermentation. Lutra Kveik yeast is actually a very quick fermenting ale yeast that provides a clean lager like flavor even at extremely high temperatures. Some call the Lutra Kviek ales, "pseudo" lagers for this reason.
